Celtic wedding is something that any married couple can enjoy. You don’t need to be Irish in order to take part in their many great traditions. You can create a special ceremony full of traditions that will make your marriage an unforgettable celebration.
Where should you have your marriage ceremony? The ideal place would be in a church. However, if you are getting married in the spring or summer, and the weather is nice, an outdoor wedding can be equally lovely. If you can be married in a garden or a meadow, this may help to bring your wedding more to life.
Lace is popular in Ireland, so a lace wedding dress would be a good idea for the bride. The bride can also wear a tiara of wild flowers mixed with shamrocks. The groom can wear a white tux with a green vest and white top hat. Or, if he’s really daring, he could wear an Irish kilt.
Popular Celtic symbols that you can include in your wedding decorations for your reception include:
- Claddagh symbol (a crowned heart being clasped by two hands)
- Shamrock
- Celtic knot
- Leprechaun
- Pot of gold
- Rainbows
If you would like to serve food to match the theme, serve your guests a traditional dish like corned beef and cabbage. As for dessert, you can have a traditional wedding cake – a dense fruitcake decorated in white icing.
In addition, the following are some great Irish wedding traditions that you may want to make a part of the Celtic theme:
- The bride can carry a lucky horseshoe. It could be a porcelain imitation, or one that is made of fabric and can be worn as a bracelet. The horseshoe should always be point upwards so that no luck can spill out.
- After the wedding ceremony is over, tossing an old shoe over the bride’s head is believed to bring her good luck (just make sure the person throwing it has good aim).
- It is believed that the groom’s mother and the bride will become lifelong friends if the mother breaks a slice of wedding cake on the bride’s head.
- To go along with your Celtic wedding theme, give an Irish toast at the wedding. You can find plenty of toasts and blessings online like the following traditional toast:
May Joy and Peace surround you, Contentment latch your door, And Happiness be with you now, And bless you evermore. May your troubles be less, And your blessings be more And nothing but happiness come through your door.
If you really want to capture the magic of this theme, you need to have Irish music. While it is best to have this music played live, if you can’t find or afford an Irish band, you can always collect your own Celtic music or purchase Celtic music CD’s.
You have the music, what about dancing? If you are really looking for something fun and memorable, why not try learning a few Irish dances. Think about it, if the bride and groom were to perform the Irish Jig in their elegant wardrobe how could this not be the hit of the reception?
Regardless of what themes you plan on using for your wedding, make sure you have fun. Your marriage is a special day that should be filled with lasting memories.
